Former Israeli Chief of Staff Dan Halutz has been appointed the chairman of a recently established company called CFR that is looking to enter the medical cannabis business in Israel, Halutz confirmed to Calcalist in an interview. His sister, Dalia Halutz, is one of the company's founders. Halutz is the latest in a string of prominent public figures to hop on the cannabis wagon. Former Israeli prime minister and chief of staff Ehud Barak is the chairman of InterCure Ltd. Former prime minister Ehud Olmert is an advisor to and an investor in Univo Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Together Pharma Ltd. is chaired by former Israel Police chief Yohanan Danino. Cannabis insurance company Cannasure Insurance Services LLC is chaired by former commander of the Israeli air force Ido Nehoshtan, and the CEO of cannabis cultivator Canndoc Ltd. is major general (ret.) Nitzan Alon.

In January, the Israeli parliament approved a long-awaited reform that allows the export of medical cannabis and its products from Israel. In the works since 2016, medical cannabis export has been estimated to have the potential to net Israel anywhere between $70 million and $1 billion a year.

Former IDF chief of staff Dan Halutz has been named the chairman of the board of directors of CFR, a newly founded company aiming to enter the medical cannabis industry in Israel, the Israeli magazine Cannabis reported on Tuesday.

CFR has an expansion facility in Bitzaron, an Israeli moshav near the southern coastal city of Ashdod. It currently seeks a full license to grow medical cannabis in Israel. The company only has a code of conduct, which means it has initial approval but no license for actual activity yet, the magazine reported.

Halutz’s sister Dalia and her son, Or Hameiri, are also involved with the company, according to Cannabis magazine.

Halutz is the latest ex-public figure to enter Israel’s growing medical cannabis business.

Former Israeli Police chief Yohanan Danino, meanwhile, is a chairman at Israeli medical cannabis company Together Pharma and former Israeli air force commander Ido Nehushtan is chairman of cannabis insurance company Cannasure Insurance Services.

The Israeli government gave its long-awaited approval for the medical cannabis export law in January 2019, paving the way for the country to become a leading medical cannabis exporter.

Israeli government research says medical cannabis exports are set to bring in an estimated $1 billion in revenue per year.
